Rhino's Smiles
Rhino first smiled what I believe to be genuine, intentional smiles 9 days ago. I’ve just failed to get any good photos of his adorable smiles. The first time he smiled, Matt was at work and I was “baby talk”ing to him and giving him kisses. He kept smiling every time, so I figured it wasn’t just gas! Then Matt came home and did the same thing and Rhino smiled up at him. Now he usually smiles at us when he wakes up and when I sing songs with him. Here are a few photos from today’s play time.
Rhino on Matt's Shoulder / Getting Changed
Here’s Rhino hanging out on Matt’s shoulder. He was just staring at something on the wall. Then Matt took him to go get changed and dressed for bed. He’s really not usually this upset when he’s changed, but he was pretty cranky until he got clothes on again

Rhino's Photos
Rhino’s photos showed up on Danette’s site! We have an access code to look at all the proofs and decide what to order. There are 30 available and I love almost all of them. Unfortunately, we can’t really afford to get all 30 prints made, so it’s a tough decision. And I can’t post any of them or scan them in when we receive prints, so you’ll just have to trust me that they are so adorable! Danette keeps a blog where she posts some of her work, and Rhino was featured in her latest entry. I love the basket photos! If you’re family, you’ll be receiving some wallet prints and will probably see more when we’re together in person. I can’t wait!
Rhino's Photo Shoot
Danielle got Rhino a sitting with her friend, Danette for a newborn photo shoot. Danette came over this morning for that. Matt worked a mid last night but stayed up late enough this morning to get a few photos in. She took some of Rhino and I, Matt and Rhino, the three of us, and of course plenty of Rhino by himself. He wasn’t exactly being cooperative. With the photos with Matt and I, he was sort of grouchy and falling asleep. Then when we wanted photos of him calm with his eyes closed, he woke up and was all squirmy! And even though we fed right before she came over, he wanted a snack break in the middle. She was really patient with us though and Mama was here so she hung out and chatted with her. Danette brought a black cloth as a backdrop and for one of the naked photos, she draped it over our couch. He pooped all over her cloth! I guess you can’t have a baby naked for an hour without some accidents! So we got creative with other blankets, one of our baskets, and a wooden soda box she brought. One of Danette’s friends was hanging out with her last night and knitting. She heard that there would be a newborn photo shoot today and quickly whipped out a cute knitted hat. It’s definitely the cutest hat he owns! The whole shoot took about two hours. Danette is really busy with her own 4 kids and her husband is TDY, so the photos will take a little while to show up on her site for us to preview. Then we’ll have a month to order prints from her. I can’t wait to see them!
Rhino's Belly Button!
Rhino’s cord stump finally fell off today! For the past nine days Matt and I have been cleaning around it, uneasily. The pediatrician said we were being too gentle and showed us how to really get in there and we were both kind of grossed out. Matt all ready has an issue with anything belly-button related, so he’s really hated having to deal with this. I know, it may be a little icky, but we’re celebrating that Rhino now has a cute little navel!
Amelia Simone!
Andrea‘s daughter was born early on the 21st! Amelia Simone weighed in at 7 lb 12 oz. Mother and daughter are both healthy and doing just fine! Congratulations, Andrea!!
Rhino's First Week
Rhino is a week old. He had his first pediatrician visit yesterday and he has gained back his birth weight. On the 16th, when he was discharged from the hospital, he was at 8 lb even, now he’s back up to 8 lb 10 oz. He still has a tinge of jaundice, but it’s nothing serious and there’s nothing we should do about it. He has also grown to 21-1/2 inches.
We’ve been doing just fine on our own. We’re about to have our families out to visit for a few weeks. Matt has had ten days of paternity leave from work and goes back on crew Saturday night. It has been nice to have him home to help out in the middle of the night, with taking care of things around the house, and doing diaper changes. We are doing just fine with sleep and get naps during the day when Rhino naps. Everything is going wonderfully and it has been so great getting to know our son!
