Alternate directions without taking the toll roads (found on the Misawa Forums):

From the POL Gate go SW towards Towada. Then get on Route 4 going to Gonohe. Continue on Route 4 straight South to Morioka. Route 4 runs parallel to the Toll Road going towards Tokyo. Route 45 from Hachinohe also goes straight to Morioka but, it will take a lot longer due to the winding coastal roads.

We actually got on 45 and took a right onto 104 then followed the signs to route 4. We got lost trying to find 104 though, took about 4-5 hours for us to get there. If I am remembering correct 104 is after the first big bridge you go under on 45, you'll take a right by a Circle K maybe Lawson's. After we got on route 4 (left turn) we followed the signs.
