Located on the tip of the Shimokita Peninsula about three hours north of Misawa Air Base, the "wild" Kandachime horses have beenbred from more than 200 years. The Kandachime have been crossbred with Tanabu and the French Breton breeds. In 1995, Aomori Prefecture Began a preservation program when the number of houses had dwindled to only nine. By 2003 their numbers had increased to 27. They are able to tolerate northern Japan's brutal winters, have great stamina, and exist on a simple diet. "Kandachime" literally means "to stand in the cold." The cape is also home to a private lighthouse and a small gift shop/snack bar. On clear days, you can see Hokkaido to the north.
