Chocolate Butterfly Cupcakes

I've mentioned it before but my sister-in-law, Jen and like to do craft-alongs even though we're nine thousand miles apart. We've crocheted a cute owl, knitted up a scarf, embroidered some Christmas cards, and baked cupcakes. We made these back in September, but I completely forgot to blog about it.

Jen found a great idea online about making butterflies out of chocolate so we had to give it a try! This is my first attempt and it was a little sloppy, but I took a lot away from it and look forward to improving on them (and other chocolate cupcake decorations) in the future!

These were really impressive, but pretty simple. I just drew a butterfly wing outline on paper, cut out a bunch of little rectangles of wax paper, and taped one piece over the wing drawing. With melted chocolate candy melts (I used Merckens white coatings well as some awesome candy pens like these) in a decorator bag, just trace the butterfly wing outline on the wax paper then fill in the details. I topped the wings with some white nonpareils. Then draw some chocolate antenna and let it all harden. When everything is set, place them on top of some cupcakes (prop up the wings with a chocolate chip on each side, which I forgot to do) and pipe on a body — viola!

I brought these to a church potluck fellowship and they were a huge hit with the kids! I just wish I had taken the time to make more so everyone could have had a special cupcake!
