Getting Organized Challenge – Day #11

Day 11 of a bowl full of lemons' 21 Day Getting Organized Challenge is the freezer! I never really felt too horribly about my freezer, but upon close inspection, it definitely needed some work! I don't have any spare little bins and baskets to make my freezer as awesome as Toni's, but it's a small freezer and I think we'll be okay. Usually there's a bit more sitting in there, but well, with all the snow (more than 36 inches this week as of yesterday morning, and it's been snowing almost all night and day since!) and needing to bundle up the boys, I just haven't done a lot of grocery shopping.

Here's our freezer:

We've been living in this house for a year and a half and I really can't remember the last time (if ever?!) I cleaned out the freezer. I'm too short to see the top of the door, but I got on a chair to pull some things off the top and noticed the awful grime in the door seal. Yuck!

I had a baggie of these colorful ice cubes that have been getting frosty all year long. (Just a couple drops of food coloring + water.) We used to use them in the boys' bath for them to play with as the cubes melt and turn the water all sorts of pretty colors. We just haven't used them in a long time and I decided it was time for them to go. I also tossed a couple freezer burned or just really old bags of tortillas and veggies, as well as some ancient ice cream that I really don't need anyway!

Then I got to work on that door seal gunk! It's still a little stained, but looking a million times better!

I took everything out and scrubbed the door, walls, shelf, and bottom down. It might seem a little silly, but I've been enjoying using my label maker, so I labeled areas for different kinds of food.

So here's our freezer now:

We have spots for convenience foods, meat (usually there's some sort of meat in here, but not today!), treats, ice (maybe it doesn't need a label, but you saw that I was keeping the puff pastry in there before!), fruit & veggies, bread / dough / crust, and ice packs. I don't have any frozen juice at the moment (we have had that lemonade for almost 3 years and I just don't see drinking it any time soon so I tossed it) but I'll make a label for juice eventually.

Does anyone else doing this challenge feel kind of nutty taking photos like this? Or like a freak for posting evidence of the disgusting ways they live? Or maybe that's just me! Regardless of how I feel photographing my freezer crumbs, I'm feeling more productive than ever and look forward to the next daily challenge at a bowl full of lemons!

  • Nice job – I have labels in my fridge but not the freezer – something I may have to rethink when I tackle this challenge in the morning.
Love the ice cube idea – I'll be stealing that one!

  • Looks really great! I need to work on mine.  I bought a few small plastic bins for ours; but I think I need a couple more.

  • It looks great, Melissa! The ice cube idea is awesome, my son will love that! I can't believe you've got 36 inches of snow…I had to re-read it 3 times! Being from KY, I've never seen that much snow! We average about 2-3 inches at a time.
    Have a great day!

  • That looks great! And I love the idea about colored ice cubes in the bath – my son would love that!

  • I totally hear you! I can't believe I'm posting the proof of my dirty disorganized ways. Good job on the freezer!

  • Beth:

I love the labels, it looks great!

  • looks great!! love the idea of the coloured ice!

yes its a lil weird taking pictures of everything but its a big eye opener and motivation

  • Absolutely.  This challenge is very different from what my blog was in 2010, so I feel kinda gross sharing my mess with the world.  Hope people don't run away! ;)
    Great sparkling after!

  • I always have a toothbrush handy for little jobs like that… actually… we have the same toothbrush! =) haha

  • I also label my freezer shelves too!  It seems strange, but it keeps me organized!  Great job!

  • You did a great job.  I love the colored ice cubes.  At first I was thinking.. oh that might be neat to make those and put them in cups of water to drink for the kids.  Might make it more interesting and get them to choose water over juice a bit more.  I think that we all need to drink more water.  Then I read that you used them in the tub.. how clever.  I am so nervous to get the kids any of those sets of tub crayons etc… because I don't want them to think that it is okay to grab a crayon or marker and start writing all over the walls with them.  The ice cubes would be great!
I also feel a little weird taking pics.  I didn't at first and then my mom was here when I was doing the toy room makeover and she looked at me like I had three heads when I was crouched down taking pics of the inside of the play kitchen.  When I asked her to hold up the dirty water bin from the carpet shampooer to show my awesome dirt removal I thought she was going to walk out.  hahaha….
It is others who make me feel weird, but us fellow bloggers… especially the ones in the challenge … appreciate it.

  • Great job!  My hubby can't believe I post some of the pictures that I do… especially the "before" ones… the really bad before ones.  It kind of helps motivate me.  It makes me accountable for the mess and then when I get it cleaned and go back to look at how it was, I appreciate it so much more.  It's always been easy for me to clean, but then to let things get bad again.  I think I need to print all these "before" pictures and put them where I can see them daily to remind me what NOT to do!
