Two More Photo Shoots
I had two more photo shoots the other day, one for our pastor and his wife and the other for a friend from church to send to her deployed father.
The Popwells wanted a photo outside the main gate by the Misawa sign to be made into missions prayer cards. I wanted to get the whole sign with the Air Force symbol in there with them. There was a lot of activity behind them, but it wasn’t anything I could control. So when I looked at the pictures at home, I practiced my Photoshop skills. I took two: a standing and a sitting shot. In the standing portrait, there were all sorts of things in the background, like a light post growing out of Pastor’s head. I decided to edit out some of those distracting elements and create a fake bokeh (out of focus) effect using this great tutorial at Obsidian Dawn. For the sitting shot, there was a traffic cone right next to Pastor’s face, a distracting little statue in the background, and the rear of a car that I took out and then blurred the background to help bring the focus back on the couple. Here’s a before and after image of the sitting pose:

Kittery is a cheerleader and her family goes to our church. Her dad’s deployed right now and she wanted to send him a photo, so I took some cheerleading poses for her. We did a couple of her doing cheerleader-y things, but this one was my favorite. It was a fast, easy session and she is such a sweetie and very photogenic. It was a fun time!

I’m trying to get some experience under my belt and build up somewhat of a portfolio for right now, so I’m pleased to take photos of families I know. Maybe soon it will become a bit more of a business and I can get my name out there, but for now I’m having fun learning!

Fun! You did an awesome job with the photoshoping. Thanks so much for including the link to the tutorial as well.
I’m also trying to get into photography & just got a new Nikon D5000. I just wish I understood more about how it works & stuff. I need to get into some lessons because I just LOVE taking photos. It’s probably my only creative outlet besides my blog.
Photoshop is also super fun & I’ve worked with it quite a bit in the past yet never even come close to figuring it out. I know it’s capable of doing sooo many interesting things though.
Anyways, keep up the good work! I love your photos & love to learn more about how to do stuff with them too

Oooh, sweet – a new camera! Let me know if you have any questions! I’ve been playing with the D40x for a little over a year now and feel pretty comfortable with it. I just got a used D80 from my dad that has so many more features that I’m trying to figure out now. I’m loving it! And Photoshop does SO much it’s pretty overwhelming, but I’m constantly learning new tricks. There is just so much free information online for photo editing.
I’ll be keeping an eye out for your photos. Sorry I’ve been kind of in my own little world for a little while. I haven’t stopped by your blog in quite some time but am going to head over there and keep up with you now!
