Here in Misawa we have a beautiful onsen resort, Komaki (Located right next to the Misawa Station.) Matt and I took Mama and Ron when they came to visit and the onsen was quite a treat! Faith Bible Academy would like their school portraits there, so I’ve been visiting the park there, Shibusawa Park (also known as “Monster Park” by on-base mommies.) The weather hasn’t gotten really nice here yet, so it’s a little dreary and cold there still, but hopefully in the next week or two the cherry blossoms will start to open up and the park will transform!

We went as a family a couple days ago to scope the place out and take some photos of Matt. Rhino found a horse and really enjoyed telling me all about it!

Today I went by myself to snap some more shots of the park and just look around. The park has a kappa pond, which is really pretty and today was kind of eerie. Kappas are mischievous, water-dwelling, mythological creatures that the Japanese believe steal crops and eat children. There were a bunch of kappa statues, kappas carved into rocks, offerings to the kappas (they’re also considered water gods), and kappa-shaped hedges. When the boys get older we’ll tell them about the kappas and toss cucumbers in the water to keep them from getting too close to rivers and lakes.
