Rhino’s Real First Food … With Us!

We were going to wait until Rhino was 6 months to start him on solids. It’s recommended to watch for certain signs like sitting up unassisted, outgrowing the tongue-thrust reflex, being interested and grabby. Rhino meets all these criteria and also has 3 teeth now, so we thought we’d give him some food and see what he does with it. I cooked up some baby carrots and we left some whole, some mashed coarsely and some in chunks. He mostly just plays with them, which is good for him to practice picking up things and pinching.

Rhino and Carrots

He will pick up a whole carrot, put it in his mouth and bite off a piece, then move it around inside and chew it up some. He swallows some of it, but plenty still makes it onto his neck fat and belly, too! So far he’s only had carrots, but we’re going to try chunks of avocado, sweet potato, banana, and maybe some rutabaga and turnip soon too.

The video is of his second carrot experience and he’s gotten a little better at it since! He still makes some pretty silly faces, though! There are some more photos of his first bites of carrots here.
